According to XDA developers, it would seem that ZTE would have forgotten a back door in the different Android devices available on the market. According to the developers who discovered the issues, it seems any apps that would know how to request access (legitimate or not) would be granted with root permissions.
It seems this is a forgotten engineering tool and it should have been removed in the production rom but still be aware and careful when you install any new app. Please, read the statement from shabbypenguin:
problem is as you can see from the pastebin all it requires is just a sim... » Read More
In the end of 2010 a study was done showing than more than 50% of second hand cellphone (smart and dumb) sold on Craigslist, eBay and other channels had personal data on them.
It is a general (but WRONG) belief that doing a full wipe or your phone using the internal "Factory Reset" is going to make your data unavailable for the future owner of your device. Tools like Recuva and plenty of others will allow any user with a minimum of knowledge to retrieve most of your precious data.
Why is that? Let's me explain you quickly. When you "wipe" your device, you basically do the same as a quick... » Read More
First Let's start with some technical details. Every GSM phone in the world have an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identification) number. This number is unique to every simple device, like a MAC address for a network equipment. You can find your mobile handset’s IMEI number by typing *#06# on your mobile and in case your phone is already stolen, and you still have the box, you'll be able to find this number on a sticker on the box.
Now how does it work, every time you turn on your phone, like every in network a hand shake is made between your device and the network you are trying t... » Read More
Here is it, the first illustration done by my friend Nicolas. Every other week, he will try to share with us his vision of the geek world.
For this week a famous one, the user, the main source of problems.
But let's go a bit in details and talk about some of the issues users are facing and also often responsible.
Some basic security... On our beloved cellphones, tablets and computers, all operating systems allow to lock the device as soon as we are not around, pin code, pattern, passwords, a lot of solution exist out there to restrict access to your private data but how many persons aroun... » Read More
Here is an interesting initiative from the National Security Agency (NSA) and believe me I will not compliment them on a regular base. Still, the Agency decided to take Android and make it even more secure, the project name is SEAndroid and can be accesses here.
The idea behind this project is to enhance the original Android proposed by Google and reinforced its security in order to avoid data loss or intrusions on the device.
Security Enhanced (SE) Android is a project to identify and address critical gaps in the security of Android. Initially, the SE Android project is enabling the use o... » Read More
Once again bad news for your privacy! TrevE (once again) is the developer letting us know about the vulnerability, and this one concerns only WiMax devices. Good for most of us but still, let me explain briefly without going into the technical details that you'll be able to find on XDA following the link below.
When you open a WiMax connection using your HTC device, it seems that two ports stay open and any attacker who gains controls can potentially not only access your data but also "manipulate data connectivity and to go even as far as being able to completely reprogram your device’s C... » Read More
Being an IT specialist has its part of down side (everybody asking you about the last phone or computer or asking you to fix their stuff for free of course...) but also a good side: it makes you aware of what technology is able to do (good and bad) and help you to "protect" yourself.
When people ask me about Google Chrome, my answer is always the same: "No, Thank you!". Indeed why would I install a spyware on my computer just because it is supposed to be half a millisecond faster?
When I say spyware, I mean it, judge for yourself:
Google receives only standard log information including your... » Read More
As already discussed about the vulnerabity discovered by TrevE and that could potentially be used to collect all kind of
information about you on HTC recent devices. On week later, HTC finally replies, acknowledges the facts and promises a OTA update for all the concerned devices.
We can only enjoy this decision but still I wonder, why did it take so long to answer, why did the developer had to make his discovery public to finally have a reaction. I am happy to see that in this age of technology, one can have the power to make a difference but also scared to see that such an important ... » Read More

Let's start by some explanations:
When HTC decided to release Android devices they also introduced "HTC Sense". In order to make user experience as smooth as possible they started collecting "anonymous" data and start logging your behavior and so far no problem as you could decide to opt-out and turn of the function and HTC did several announcement stating the app was harmless and data collected were only done to improve their products and services.
But, there is a but... According to XDA Developer TrevE is is very easy to develop an application that have only as permission the write to ... » Read More

Like most of you I spend my day with my phone in hand and I come so use it for every little thing. One things I did not like in the past was remembering all the URLs on magazines, websites and all. QR Code was the answer and as you can see even on this site I use them in order to make your (but also my) life easier. I even use them to share my contact details.
No need to type anymore, just scan the code and the phone is "smart" enough to understand what to do with the content of the code! SMART, you said??? Not really!
According to Kaspersky, these code can but used for the worst, rerout... » Read More
