Viber, WhatsApp, Skype, Touch…

Communications by Stuart MilesFor a while now, I have been looking for a good/cheap way to communicate with my family abroad. I have been trying a lot of software, some free, some very familiar and some not so good…

For this reason I decided to share here my personal experience and opinion on some of the tools available on the market and the functions they give you.

Let me spoil the suspense, NONE is perfect in my opinion but…

  1. Viber: My personal favorite. Easy to use, this software use the cellphone to connect people so no need to create and give an id for your friends to find you, they will as soon as you join the network. The voice quality is also great on Wifi and very decent over 3G. It misses some key functions though, I quite often want to share contact cards or documents with my contacts and Viber dos not allow it. the missing feature that would make it almost perfect. Ah, did I mention if, Viber is FREE, is very battery friendly and is also available on iOS.
    • Pros:
      • Allows phone calls (WiFi & 3G)
      • Allows texting
      • Allows pictures sharing
      • Allows location sharing
      • Let you know the message status (sent/received)
      • Off-line messaging
    • Cons:
      • The interface needs a real designer :)
      • Does not allow contact sharing
      • Does not allow file sharing
      • No landscape support
      • Does not tell you when a contact is inactive for some time or removed the app

  2. Skype: No need to present this one, the old guy here. You create an account, give your id to your friend and you’re good to go. You can use it on your phone, your computer or even your landline phone (yes, some have Skype integrated) and you can be called from a phone (Not free – Skype-in), you can also call land line or text friends all around the world without Skype (not free either – Skype-out plus purchase of credit). So if you are willing to pay probably the best alternative.
    • Pros:
      • It is really crossed-platform
      • Free Skype-to-Skype text and call
      • Allows file sharing
      • Allows video-calls
    • Cons:
      • A LOT of option have to be purchased for a limited period of time
      • ID based (you need to create a profile to start using it)
      • No message status
      • Your contacts have to be online
      • You need to manually starts the app

  3. WhatsApp Messenger: Propably the best for SMS and also one of the first so the user base is quite big. But two issues here, first it does only texting and honestly that is a shame, second, it is not free when more and ;ore competition is appearing with new ideas and more functionalities. Still with this one you can share any kind of file, you know when your correspondent was last seen online (that is really missing to Viber)
    • Pros:
      • Available on iOS, Blackberries and Android
      • Allows file sharing
      • Let you know the message status (sent/received)
      • Off-line messaging
      • Let you know when your counterpart was last seen connected
    • Cons:
      • Only SMS, no voice
      • Free the first year, $1.99/year after that

  4. Touch- formerly PingChat!:This one was the first I tried as I was looking for a FREE alternative to WhatsApp and it is a good one, even if it still does not do voice. The main issue in my humble opinion is that it is not based one the phone number but on a pseudo that you need to share and so slow down its adoption.
    • Pros:
      • Available on iOS, Blackberries and Android
      • Allows file sharing
      • Let you know the message status (sent/received)
      • Off-line messaging
      • Very “social” oriented
    • Cons:
      • Very “social” oriented
      • Only SMS, no voice
      • You need to create a ID and share it with your friends
      • Does not tell you when a contact is inactive for some time or removed the app

I know there are a LOT more solutions out there, Facebook chat (I don’t use FB…), Google+/Messenger, iChat () and other but I always try to be as cross platform as possible and Viber offers me a very good alternative between functions, friends on iOS and eventually Blackberries, it is also nice with my abttery and allows me to make international phone calls for free, what else can I ask for? YOU let me know!

    Hi!

This is a member of the Viber Development Team! :)
Thanks for putting Viber on your list.

We are always happy to hear our users feedback!

Sure, I really enjoy using your software but like i said, it is not perfect, you have room for improvement, but I have hope ;)
Also on the design, you should try to give it a cleaner look and stick to the android official template, all users would gain from having common ergonomics in all apps
      Peace

        Hi,
        @Osimood

I would like to refer to some of the things you had on your cons list:

-Viber supports Landscape mode,it enables your messaging display for landscape view.

-Viber can’t tell if a user removed the app from his device. However if a user didn’t use the app it will automatically be deleted after 45 days of inactivity, and the user will be removed from the Viber contact list.

We continue to expand and improve our service all the time :)

          Hi,
The landscape function is not for the whole app but only some sections, using a phone with keyboard I find it limiting.
Also for the user “availability” have a look at the competition, WhatsApp is great on this matter (personal opinion)
I am sure your product can go from good to great, don’t stop improving.
          Peace

We are planning Landscape mode for other sections as well.

About the inavailability – well, this issue is a little debatable, since some users prefer not to be seen “online” (i.e they want their usage of Viber to stay private). We are considering adding this feature – maybe as an optional one – and once we have news we’ll let you know.

Remember that we are relatively a young app, and we plan, as you said, to keep on improving. If you’d like updates and news from us, you can email us at the email address we are writing these comments with and request to join the mailing list :)

            Best regards.

          • Osimood

For the landscape I can only oatiently wait for it
For the unavailability the best solution would be to show, last time seen online
As for a young app, I know and as I stated, I really enjoy your app :) continue the good work and continue improving

Hi Viber team. If you had the ability to decide which users you show your availability too that would be a great feature. Maybe you want your partner to see you are online but not your boss.

Thank you for the suggestion, we will take it into account for future releases.

Meanwhile, we invite you to enter our Feature Request page and post your suggestion there, or join an existing similar suggestion. The more people join on a request, the faster it will become reality :)

Is there a video call in viber app. If there isn’t, are you planing in the future to have this feature?

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

Not yet. We are considering to add it in future versions :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/clefintas Clefin Tas

Can we know when the Contact came online for the last time. this feature is in Wats app.. Please tell me how we can check or please update this feature…

    • http://www.viber.com/ Viber

When you use Viber, you can tell indirectly if your contact is online as follows:

When you make a Viber call, you will first see “Calling”. It will change to “Ringing” if your contact is online and their phone is literally ringing.
When you send a message, “Delivered” means the message has been received on the other side’s phone (they’re online). If you only see “Sent”, it means it’s been sent from you, but pending the other side to come online (they’re offline at the moment). So, if messages remain at “Sent” and do not become “Delivered”, you might want to check with your destination contact whether or not they are connected to the internet.

In the future we might add an “Online” status message, but we still don’t know when this will happen.

My daughter is in Israel. We both downloaded Viber. it will only allow us to txt, not call. Why?

Which phone do both of you have?
      Which versions of operating systems?
